The Stratford Knights Varsity Baseball team defeated James Island 8-5 thanks to a strong start, and a big second inning. James Island got on the board first with a single run in the top half of the first inning, but the Knights would answer in the bottom half. Dylan Stewart would triple to lead off for the Knights, and Cody Kinard’s sacrifice fly would bring him in to even things up. In the bottom of the second, the Stratford bats would come alive. Josh Davis doubled to begin the inning, James Island would then get a strikeout, but designated hitter Kevin Mood would walk to put runners on first and second with one out. A.J. Bryant would then reach on an error to load the bases for Matthew Cudd. With an 0-2 count, Cudd would single to left, scoring Davis. This would set the stage for Stewart who would drive a double to right field, scoring Mood and Bryant. Kinard would follow Stewart’s double with one of this own, scoring Cudd and Stewart. Blake Marrs would come to the plate and single giving the Knights runners at the corners with one out. Travis Lott would then hit a sac fly to right, scoring Kinard and giving the Knights a 7-1 lead. James Island would pick up two runs in the top of the third to cut the Stratford lead to 7-3. The Knights would get one back in the bottom of the third when Cudd grounded out to first, scoring Vito Dorio who had reached earlier in the inning on a walk. James Island would try to close the distance in the sixth, picking up two more runs, but Stratford would hold on for the 8-5 win. Robbie Fleming got the start on the mound for the Knights. He gave up five runs, four earned, over six innings. Kaden Taylor would pitch the seventh inning to earn the save.
